Drama lançado em 2003, dirigido por Michael Burke, baseado no seu curta de 1998 “Fishbelly White”. The Mudge Boy conta a história do jovem Duncan Mudge, que possui um difícil relacionamento com o pai, perde a mãe na pré-adolescência e sua melhor amiga é uma galinha. Após a morte de sua mãe e ele dá continuidade no cuidado com os bichos, o que não agrada seu pai - dela ele herda alguns hábitos estranhos, além de parecer muito com ela. A história acontece numa zona rural dos EUA: a maioria dos habitantes está ligada à produção agropecuária, frequentam a igreja, e alguns jovens não se adequam àquela vida, dentre eles, Perry e sua turma, que passam a levar o garoto dos Mudge para beber e farrear. O garoto é "esquisito", e com a falta da mãe costuma usar suas roupas, luta para lidar com a própria sexualidade, afinal ele está em plena puberdade - o que deu título em português ao filme, O despertar de uma adolescência - e tentar se dar bem com o pai. Duncan possui nos novos amigos, principalmente em Perry, uma fortaleza e chance de tentar ser diferente, é quando eles se envolvem numa relação de cumplicidade além da amizade...

The film follows the story of Duncan, a fourteen-year-old misfit farm boy trying to fill the void and alleviate the numbness left by his mother's passing. Unable to let her go quite yet, Duncan mimics his dead mother. He talks in her voice at the dinner table and wears her fur coat to bed. Edgar, Duncan's distant sixty-year-old father, doesn't understand the strange manifestations of his son's mourning. Why can't Duncan grieve like a normal person? Edgar becomes intent on laying down some new rules and turning his coddled son into someone who can take on the family farm.
