The mysterious and charismatic Russian-born Nikolai Luzhin is a driver for one of London's most notorious organized crime families of Eastern European origin. The family itself is part of the Vory V Zakone criminal brotherhood. Headed by Semyon, whose courtly charm as the welcoming proprietor of the plush Trans-Siberian restaurant impeccably masks a cold and brutal core, the family's fortunes are tested by Semyon's volatile son and enforcer, Kirill, who is more tightly bound to Nikolai than to his own father. But Nikolai's carefully maintained existence is jarred once he crosses paths at Christmastime with Anna Khitrova, a midwife at a North London hospital. Anna is deeply affected by the desperate situation of a young teenager who dies while giving birth to a baby. Anna resolves to try to trace the baby's lineage and relatives. The girl's personal diary also survives her; it is written in Russian, and Anna seeks answers in it. Anna's mother Helen does not discourage her, but Anna's irascible Russian-born uncle Stepan urges caution. He is right to do so; by delving into the diary, Anna has accidentally unleashed the full fury of the Vory. With Semyon and Kirill closing ranks and Anna pressing her inquiries, Nikolai unexpectedly finds his loyalties divided. The family tightens its grip on him; who can, or should, he trust? Several lives - including his own - hang in the balance as a harrowing chain of murder, deceit, and retribution reverberates through the darkest corners of both the family and London itself.

Esteban completa 17 anos. Para comemorar seu aniversário, Manuela, sua mãe, o leva ao teatro para assistir à peça "Um Bonde Chamado Desejo". Enquanto esperam pela saída da atriz principal, Huma Rojo, Manuela confessa ao filho que interpretou o mesmo papel de Huma 20 anos antes, junto com seu pai, de quem ele nunca soube notícias. Porém, Esteban morre acidentalmente no caminho, e Manuela parte em busca do homem que um dia foi seu marido, para quitar uma pendência do passado. A single mother in Madrid sees her only son die on his 17th birthday as he runs to seek an actress's autograph. She goes to Barcelona to find the lad's father, a transvestite named Lola who does not know he has a child. First she finds her friend, Agrado, a wild yet caring transvestite; through him she meets Rosa, a young nun bound for El Salvador, but instead finds out she is pregnant by Lola. Manuela becomes the personal assistant of Huma Rojo, the actress her son admired, by helping Huma manage Nina, the co-star and Huma's lover. However, Agrado soon takes over when Manuela must care for Hermana Rosa's risky pregnancy. With echos of Lorca, "All About Eve," and "Streetcar Named Desire," the mothers (and fathers and actors) live out grief, love, and friendship.

Manuela (Cecilia Roth) es madre la cual se ha dedicado totalmente a su hijo Esteban (Eloy Azorín), trabaja como enfermera en un hospital en Madrid. El padre del Hijo se llama Lola, un transexual. Pero Manuela no le quiere revelar la verdadera identidad de el padre de su hijo. Su hijo escribe un guión llamado "Todo sobre mi madre" y en éste refleja su inquietud por su padre, ya que no lo conoce. El mismo día del cumpleaños del hijo van a ver una obra de teatro y al terminar la obra, él va en busca de un autógrafo de la actriz y en el intento pierde la vida. Manuela parte hacia Barcelona para ir en busca del padre y revelarle que cuando ella partió hace mucho tiempo se fue con un hijo de los dos. Pero la búsqueda no será fácil y mientras lo busca, Manuela se recupera en el mundo femenino.
